Straußfurt flood retention basin

The Challenge

To adapt the retention capacity of the HRB Straußfurt to future extreme flooding risks and improve flood protection along the lower Unstrut region.

The Solution

The project focused on raising the protective dam using wave deflectors, limiting structural interventions to the crown area. The secondary dam was restored to its original geometry, made passable, and designed to overflow automatically during high water events. A dam embrasure with geosynthetic concrete mats was constructed—an efficient and economical solution for erosion control and sealing.

The Impact

The full water level target will be raised by 1.0 m, expanding the flood retention area by approximately 10 million m³. This upgrade ensures enhanced flood protection for the downstream region under future climate conditions.
